LEWISTON, Idaho
- Taylor Siemens tossed an eight-hitter and struck out nine while teammate
Brian Sharp went 4-for-5 with three RBI to help No. 3 California Baptist
(49-14) remain alive with a 10-3 win over No. 10 Tennessee Wesleyan (46-18)
during a loser-out game at the 54th annual Avista-NAIA World Series at
Lewis-Clark State College's Harris Field on Saturday afternoon.
Siemens, a lanky 6-foot-5 sophomore left-hander, improved to 11-1 on the
season with his complete game performance. He gave up only two earned runs
and two walks. He also struck out nine.
Sharp helped kick start the
offense that was lagging on Friday when the third-seeded Lancers opened the
10-team double-elimination tournament with an 8-0 setback to No. 6 seed Oklahoma City. In fact,
the top four hitters in CBU's lineup - Matt Marnati, Garrett Rau, Sharp, and
Sharif Othman - combined to go 8-of-17 at the plate with seven RBI and six
runs scored. The other two hits came from designated hitter Drew Madrigal.
Tennessee Wesleyan, which was making its first Series appearance and was
the No. 10 seed, finishes it season at 46-18.
The Bulldogs did manage
to strike first in the bottom of the second inning when Max Loveland
doubled, stole third, and scored on Brad Pippa's sacrifice fly to right.
The lead, however, was short lived as CBU scored the next seven runs in
the game.
Cal Baptist was able to take advantage of control problems
by Bulldog start Freddy Lewis for a pair of walks to start the third. After
a ground out moved the runners to second and third, Sharp singled in the
Lancers first run. A double steal scored the second run, while Othman's
single to right field scored Sharp to put CBU ahead 3-1.
The Lancers
added four more in the fourth to break the game open, all with two outs.
With runners on first and third, Marnati dropped a bunt, which relief
pitcher Daniel Wood fielded and appeared to have an easy play on Marnati at
first. Wood, however, fired the ball wide of the Bulldog first baseman and
the ball wound up in right field. That allowed two runs to score and Marnati
to reach all the way to third. Rau followed with an RBI double down
the right-field line and Sharp brought Rau in with a single to right.
Pippa hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth for his seventh
blast of the season. That helped cut the lead to 7-2, but the Lancers
answered with two runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-2 advantage. Marnati
singled in a run, while Sharp collected an RBI double.
Each team
scored a run late in the game. The Bulldogs made it 9-3 in the bottom of the
eighth on Loveland's RBI single,
while Othman had an RBI single for CBU in the top of the ninth.
Loveland
went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Tennessee Wesleyan, while Pippa was 2-for-3
with two RBI.
Cal Baptist, 48-13 overall, returns to action on
Monday at noon, Pacific time, against the loser of the Lewis-Clark
State/Point Loma Nazarene contest, which will be played Saturday night.
