Glaum's Single in 12th Inning Lifts Embry-Riddle to 3-2 Win

05-28-10
LEWISTON, Idaho – Aaron Glaum lined a single to send the winning run home in the 12th inning as No. 7 seed Embry-Riddle (Fla.) (45-17) defeated No. 10 seed Tennessee Wesleyan (46-17) 3-2 in Game 1 of the Avista-NAIA World Series from Harris Field. The Eagles now play No. 2 Cumberland (Tenn.) on Saturday at 3 p.m. PDT. Tennessee Wesleyan falls into the double-elimination losers’ bracket and plays at Noon on Saturday.

It was a pitching gem between Embry-Riddle starter Austin Quinn and Tennessee Wesleyan hurler Hamilton Bennett. Quinn lasted into the 12th inning and tossed a season-high 123 pitches. He didn’t get credit for the victory as he departed with the scored tied at 1-1. He was pulled in the top of the 12th after a lead-off single by Max Loveland. He became the first pitcher since 2001 in the World Series to toss more than nine innings.

Bennett went seven full innings after he struck out nine batters. He dominated early as he sat down his first eight batters faced. The junior lefty posted two strike outs apiece in four of his first five innings. He allowed one earned run on five hits and allowed two walks.

Loveland put Tennessee Wesleyan on top 2-1 when he scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th. He stole second, advanced to third on a balk and crossed home on the fly-out by Brad Pippa. His steal of second was his 50th on the year and the team’s 166th stolen base. That team total is the second-highest output in the NAIA this season.

The Eagles tied up the score in the bottom half of the inning after Josh Krummel reached on an error by the shortstop. Coming back in to run at first base, Dane Beaudette eventually scored the tying run on an RBI-single by Branden Roper-Hubbert. After a single by Steve Sabins moved Roper-Hubbert over to third base, Glaum’s heroics handed Embry-Riddle its 14th win in the World Series.

The teams couldn’t snap the scoreless tie as both pitchers dominated early. Embry-Riddle broke through first on a fielder’s choice RBI-groundout by J.T. Warmoth in the seventh inning. A sacrifice fly by Johnny Smith knotted the score at 1-1 in the eighth.

The winning pitcher was Phillip Reamy, who pitched the 12th inning. He allowed the inherited runner (that was credited to Quinn) to score. He didn’t allow a base hit or walk as he improved to 4-0 on the season. Quinn’s line went 11.0 innings as he recorded nine strike outs and no walks.

The loss went to Jason Ferguson as he fell to 2-2. He tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out three and gave up one walk.

Roper-Hubbert, Sabins and Glaum each had two hits apiece for Embry-Riddle. Tennessee Wesleyan had seven different players stroke a hit.

The announced attendance was 1,975.
