LEWISTON, Idaho – Sophomore right-hander Collin Perschon struck out 16 batters and Kurt Koshelnik had four hits and scored two runs to lead Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) to a 7-2 win over Bellevue (Neb.), in a winner’s bracket game at the 45th annual NAIA Avista Baseball World Series Monday.
The Warriors (53-12) will play Western Oregon, the tournament’s only other unbeaten team Tuesday at 7 p.m. In loser-bracket games, Dallas Baptist (Tex.), will take on Birmingham-Southern (Ala.), at noon and Warner Southern (Fla.), will face Bellevue (47-17) at 3:30.
In Monday’s elimination games, Dallas Baptist ripped Biola (Calif.), 14-0, and Warner Southern outscored Indiana Tech 6-1. Western Oregon defeated Birmingham-Southern, 16-8 in a winner’s bracket contest.
Perschon set a World Series record by striking out seven consecutive batters, including the side in both the second and third inning, and took a shutout into the ninth before the Bruins scored their only two runs on a single by Bodie Simpson and a sacrifice fly by Zack Hinkley.
Perschon, who won just three games during the regular season, allowed six hits and walked just one batter in 8 1/3 innings before Ricky Bostock got the final two outs to wrapup the victory for the Warriors.
Meanwhile, LCSC was chipping away against a trio of Bellevue pitchers, scoring single runs in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth innings before adding a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.
Koshelnik, who had three infield hits, scored in the first on a ground out by Trevor Brown and in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Nick Walker. He also drove in a run in the eighth with a bunt single. Walker also had a sacrifice fly in the third.
LCSC outhit Bellevue 13-6. Matt Hellman, who went two for five and drove in a run, was the only other Warrior beside Koshelnik with more than one. Leadoff hitter Brendan Ryan singled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. Kam Oschner had two of Bellevue’s six safeties.
